Horizontal refraction and whispering gallery waves in the vicinity of curvilinear isobaths in a shallow sea

Abstract: Horizontal refraction is an important physical phenomenon that can be observed in the course of sound propagation in shallow-water environments with 3D inhomogeneities. Its manifestations can affect the solution of many practical problems of underwater acoustics. The horizontal refraction equation is  derived, the concept of ``vertical modes + horizontal  rays'' is explained, and the link to 3D rays is
established. An example of how horizontal refraction  affects the solution of acoustical ranging problem is
considered.

An interesting form of horizontal refraction  manifestation is the formation of a whispering gallery  in the vicinity of curvilinear isobath in a shallow sea. Associated mathematical challenges are discussed, and the main properties of whispering gallery waves are illustrated.
